Movie Review – Trouble with the Curve

See the ball, hit the ball. A common phrase heard around baseball for years. See the ball…if you see the ball your mind is clear and able to process what’s happening around you. Hit the ball…with your mind clear you’re able to make contact, get a hit, take your base. See the ball, hit the ball. Seems simple enough. Yet this is where Trouble with the Curve misses the mark as it so badly wants to hit a Home Run at the bottom of the 9th, with the bases loaded, your team down by three runs, and you’re at the plate with a full count (3 balls, 2 strikes for those not in the know). When in fact it keeps hitting a foul ball early at bat and eventually when the hit happens, there’s no coming back from the deficit your team finds itself in.

Movie Review – The Bourne Legacy

Jeremy Renner has had a big year so far with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Marvel’s: The Avengers.  He’s proved that he can play in the big boy sandbox as a team player and can go toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise and Robert Downey, Jr. Does Renner have the ability to lead a big budget action movie on his own and is he able to carry the weight of a very successful movie franchise on his shoulders and usher in a new continuation of the story?

All these questions and more will be answered in the next episode of Soap.  (There are a few of you out there laughing right now that get this reference).

Or just read my review below the image….

Movie Review – Magic Mike

It’s been a while, but I’m back with another movie review and this time I got the chance to see the highly anticipated Channing Tatum tour-de-force known as Magic Mike. Some of you are probably thinking that I drew the short straw in the office pool in getting this movie. And that may in fact be the case…usually because I’m never at the Geek for E Offices so I never know what straw I’ve drawn. So I took my lumps like a man and said that I will review Magic Mike. Why? Because I have a girlfriend that has been wanting to see Magic Mike since we saw the first preview on TV six weeks ago. And being the good boyfriend that I am, I’ve asked my girlfriend to attend the screening with me and help with the review.

This had to be the first screening I’ve attended in a long time where they waited till every seat that could be filled was filled. No woman was left behind in getting to witness Magic Mike. The anticipation to see this movie is huge (no pun intended) and to my girlfriend this was the movie of the summer…she was as excited to see Magic Mike as I was when we went to see The Avengers.

Sit back, relax, please don’t throw dollar bills at the review, and get ready to read The Good, The Bad, and The Girlfriend’s Take about Magic Mike!

Movie review – “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”

I don’t even know where to start when it comes to Kirk Jone’s What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Ironically, I don’t think that Kirk Jones knew where to start either. WTEWYE is a mess with too many plots, too many characters, and too much going on. It’s another one of those movies that takes the formula that Paul Haggis used with Crash and turns it into a comedy. It didn’t work with Gary Marshall’s Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve movies and it doesn’t work here either.

I guess no one learned that sometimes too much is just too much.

Movie Review: “The Five Year Engagement”

Written by Jason Segel and Nick Stoller, who also directed the movie, The Five Year Engagement should be the movie that makes you want to laugh so loud that your body will breakdown from all the shaking going on. Between the two of them we’ve seen plenty of brilliantly written movies over the years – Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppetts, Fun with Dick and Jane. Add to that long time Segel fan and friend Judd Apatow as the Producer behind this and other movies such as  Bridesmaids, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The 40-Year Old Virgin, and Pineapple Express and you’d think that this would be the recipe for another hit. Yet The Five Year Engagement falls flat and can’t really seem to shake itself out to become the movie we want it to be.

The plot is relatively simple.  Tom (Jason Segel) and Violet (Emily Blunt) have been dating for a year after meeting on News Year’s Eve. On that very night a year later, Tom and Violet get engaged. However the twist is that they don’t have any plans for their wedding and thus have ups and downs over a five year stretch on their way to the “big day.”

So what could go wrong with this premise? Answer: A lot!

Movie Review – The Cabin in the Woods

Staring some faces I’m sure you’ll recognize from various television shows and one guy that has an even larger career then when The Cabin in the Woods was filmed … Co-writers Joss Whedon (TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield,) try to deliver a movie that reinvents the horror movie experience. The movie was originally set to be released in 2009, however, due to MGM going into bankruptcy that Fall, The Cabin in the Woods was forced to sit on the shelf until now.

Was it worth the wait and did they succeed?

Movie Review – American Reunion

The Class of 1999 is back!!! That’ right, those crazy kids from the American Pie film franchise are back on the big screen. Let’s forget about the direct to DVD American Pie movies (even though they did have some funny moments in all of them) because we get a new movie featuring our favorite graduating class from East Great Falls.

The American Pie movies are the raunchy teen comedy for our 30-something generation. There is a connection between the characters and their stories and how it relates to us. Now this doesn’t mean that an older crowd won’t get the jokes because let’s be real here….this kind of stuff happened to every generation. But for us, the now in our 30’s and moving on with our lives, this is our lives albeit not with the crazy things that happen to Jim.

When we first met Jim, Stifler, Oz, Finch and Kevin back in 1999’s American Pie we were following them along their last days in high school. Kevin was dating Vicky. Jim and Michelle had an interesting night when they hooked up. Oz and Heather were not sure where they would be in a few years. Finch was Finch and well Stifler was that guy that just wanted to keep the party going. In 2001’s American Pie 2 our group of friends are back from college and trying to keep friendships going that had been around for years. Relationships may come and go but summer fun with your close friends will all ways be there. Then in 2003’s American Wedding we get to watch as two kids that met in high school and stayed together through college are nowgetting married as Jim and Michelle tie the knot.

So what has happened to our favorite class from East Great Falls since 2003?
