6/20/2016 – Box Office Breakdown

Geek for E_Box Office Breakdown

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with Kevin Hart vs an animated blue fish voiced by Ellen Degeneres. A heavy weight battle of Strength, Wit, and Comedy. One made over $136 MILLION dollars and the other….not so much.  The winner and by a lot of money…Finding Dory took the top spot with the Johnson/Hart comedy coming in second by $100 million dollars. Lots of other recent flicks dropped in the charts.

  1. Finding Dory (new): Disney’s long awaited sequel to Finding Nemo launched to a $126,183,170 MILLION dollar opening weekend. I think Disney may have made some money on this one. Read our review!
  2. Central Intelligence (new): Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart couldn’t compete against an animated fish. Look for word of mouth to propel this movie forward in sales and to keep it in the top five for the next few weeks. Read our review!
  3. The Conjuring 2 (last week was the 1st spot): I’m betting WB is soooo glad they released this last week.
  4. Now you See Me 2 (last week in the 3rd spot): Three weeks out and still holding it’s own.
  5. Warcraft (last week in the 2nd spot): Dropped 73% in ticket sales but is doing amazing over seas. Look for the sequel in three years.

Trailer: Our Kind of Traitor

Official Synopsis: While on holiday in Marrakech, an ordinary English couple, Perry (Ewan McGregor – THE IMPOSSIBLE, THE GHOST) and Gail (Naomie Harris –SPECTRE, SOUTHPAW), befriend a flamboyant and charismatic Russian, Dima (Stellan Skarsgård – AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO), who unbeknownst to them is a kingpin money launderer for the Russian mafia.

When Dima asks for their help to deliver classified information to the British Secret Services, Perry and Gail get caught in a dangerous world of international espionage and dirty politics. The couple is propelled on a perilous journey through Paris and Bern, a safe house in the French Alps, to the murky corners of the City of London and an alliance with the British Government via a ruthless and determined MI6 agent (Damian Lewis – HOMELAND).

From the writer of DRIVE (Hossein Amini) adapting the hit John le Carré novel – the mind behind TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, and directed by acclaimed Susanna White – this taut thriller twists and turns its way around the world with dramatic consequences.

6/13/2016 – Box Office Breakdown

The top three are all brand new! I think that shows that people were out to the movies this past weekend. Minus one movie, the remaining four of the top five are all sequels.

Geek for E_Box Office Breakdown

Let’s begin:

  1. The Conjuring 2 (new) – Magically took the top spot and nearly doubled the next two in ticket sales.
  2. Warcraft (new) – Based on the very large interactive online game. Didn’t do as bad as some predicted it would.
  3. Now You See Me 2 (new) – Got a great review at Geek for E.
  4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – Horrible return on investment in week number two; dropped almost 60% in ticket sales.
  5. X-Men: Apocalypse – It is what it is….not much else to say.

News and notes:

  • The Jungle Book (2016 live version) is still in the top 10 and has been out for nine weeks. I think it has some longevity there.
  • Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The Nice Guys are both four weeks in release and four weeks of dropping returns in sales.  The same is true of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping after two weeks of release. I think we can say that all three are a bust at the box office.

I hope you all have a great week. Remember to leave a comment either here on the site or on our Facebook page.

Trailer: Sausage Party (TV Spot #1)

From the guys that brought you This is the End comes an animated feature so sliced and diced and almost fried that you have to wonder why you wouldn’t want to see it!!

Sausage Party released a new TV spot last night and it just makes me want to see this movie even more then I did when I saw the Red Band trailer months ago.

You can join Sausage Party in theaters on August 12, 2016.

Trailer News: Moana

Disney has released the first teaser for their upcoming animated feature, Moana staring the voices of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho’

Moana tells the story our titular hero (Cravalho), who teams up with Maui (Johnson), a sort of has-been demi-god, in order to complete an epic quest on the high seas. Monsters and various pitfalls will come between them and their endgame, with plenty of adventure and life lessons to learn from.

Moana hits theaters on November 23, 2016.

6/6/2016 – Box Office Breakdown

Back for another week, the event that all have been asking for, I bring you the Box Office Breakdown!

Geek for E_Box Office Breakdown

  1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (new) – The Turtles are back….along with April and Casey Jones! Not a bad performance in the box office to take the number one spot this week.
  2. X-Men: Apocalypse – The X-Men are back….along with Magneto and Apocalypse (now with less Ivan Ooze). Second week out and had a giant drop in sales by 66% from last week.
  3. Me Before You (new) – So…um…..anyone know what this one is about and why it’s even here? Out for a week and made the third spot, it will drop fast over the next week.
  4. Alice Through the Looking Glass – Alice may want to stop visiting Wonderland as this movie is dropping faster then a brick off of a building. Time for Disney to put a fork in this franchise because it is DONE!
  5. The Angry Birds Movie – Hey, its still hanging in there so three weeks out and still top five is a good sign. The box office drop….not so much.

News and notes:

  • Andy Sandberg and the Lonely Island Boys have a movie out there called Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and it premiered in the eighth spot. Maybe these spoof movies are only good on HBO or in short-spots on SNL because the full length movie business isn’t working out.
  • Zootopia will be out on on Blu-Ray and Digital Media soon so says the commercial I saw this morning. Still making money 14 weeks since release date.

5/31/2016 – Box Office Breakdown

Welcome back to the new (and hopefully back every week) “Box Office Breakdown” where I’ll give you the top five movies of the weekend as well some some tip-ins now and then.

Geek for E_Box Office Breakdown

  1. X-Men: Apocalypse (new) – First week out and took the top spot over the holiday weekend. FOX getting the win with their Marvel owned characters.
  2. Alice Through the Looking Glass (new) – First week out and considered a BUST by industry standards. First question is who asked for this sequel as Alice in Wonderland wasn’t universally received? Next is has no one noticed that Johnny Depp’s star is slowly sinking?
  3. The Angry Birds Movie – Dropped from first to third because let’s be honest, Rovio is milking this franchise for all its’ worth and the target audience went last week to see it. Count on this to keep sliding down the charts faster then Sony wants.
  4. Captain America: Civil War – Dropped from second to fourth but it is still making money.
  5. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – Dropped from third to fifth in it’s second week out. Neighbors was a funny movie but it was also a complete movie, there was no need for a sequel.

Honorable mentions: Zootopia has been out for 13 weeks and is still in the top 10. How’s that for some Disney longevity?

Weekend Roundup (11/30/15)

Hope everyone had a safe and fun Thanksgiving weekend. Two of the three new releases did great, that third one landed in the 12th spot. The Hunger Games still has the top spot with The Good Dinosaur and Creed all rounded out the top three.
