Giveaway: Tosca at the Lyric!

Opera!  It’s more than just a gal with horns belting out German.  (Though that’s pretty cool too.)  Our gracious PR partners have given us a tip on how to get discount tix to Tosca at the Lyric — enter code TOSCA to purchase seats for just $39 – $79 (regular price $95 – $165)!

Here’s the deets on Tosca, for those of you — like me — are pretty iffy on the whole opera storylines thing.

TOSCA

Artistic Director James Harp | Based on “La Tosca” by Victorien Sardou | Sung in Italian with English Surtitles

Coming to the Lyric in Baltimore on November 1 & 3, 2013 – the timeless opera by Puccini!

www.lyricoperahouse.com

Puccini’s great masterpiece of love, lust, and revenge is one of the most dramatically compelling in the entire operatic repertoire. The opera diva Floria Tosca is in love with the painter Mario Cavaradossi, but the evil Baron Scarpia, the Roman Chief of Police, desires her as well. His nefarious plot to have her involves political intrigue, sadistic brutality and horrific torture. Tosca’s dream of love is shattered by Scarpia’s duplicity, and in one of the most famous endings in opera, she leaps to her tragic death.

The production will star rising American superstar Jill Gardner in the title role, celebrated Puccini specialist Dinyar Vania as Cavaradossi, and Metropolitan Opera Star and Baltimore favorite Eric Owens in his role debut as Scarpia. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Steven White in a magnificent production directed by James Harp.

But even better?  We’ve got a pair of tickets for one lucky reader!  A’yup — free culture!  How to get a pair for yourself?  Read on, my dear.  Read on!

GRAVITY
Rated; PG-13
gravitymovie.com<http://www.gravity-movie.com>

Cast: Sandra Bullock and George Clooney
Director: Alfonso Cuarón

Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side”) and George Clooney (“Syriana”) star in “Gravity,” a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space.  The film was directed by Oscar® nominee Alfonso Cuarón (“Children of Men”).

Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command.  But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes.  The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.  The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue.  As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.

But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

“Gravity” was written by Alfonso Cuarón & Jonás Cuarón, and produced by Alfonso Cuarón and David Heyman (the “Harry Potter” films).  Chris deFaria, Nikki Penny and Stephen Jones served as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes team includes multiple Oscar®-nominated director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki (“Children of Men,” “The New World”); production designer Andy Nicholson (art director “Alice in Wonderland”); editors Alfonso Cuarón and Mark Sanger (VFX editor “Children of Men”); and costume designer Jany Temime (the “Harry Potter” films).  The visual effects were handled by Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Tim Webber (“The Dark Knight”).  The music was composed by Steven Price (“Attack the Block”).

Warner Bros. Pictures Presents an Esperanto Filmoj/Heyday Films Production, an Alfonso Cuarón Film, “Gravity.”  The film will be released in 3D and 2D and IMAX®, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

This film has been rated PG-13 for intense perilous sequences, some disturbing images and brief strong language.

So, let’s get to the passes, right?  Well, here’s how to get ’em….

Baltimore Screening of Enough Said: get your passes!

enougsaidposter

James Gandolfini was an amazing performer.  Julia Louis Dreyfus could pretty much read the phone book and I’d be crying with laughter.  So it’s pretty much a sure thing that Enough Said, a film that brings the two together — and is one of Gandolfini’s last films — is a movie to catch.  What’s it about?  Glad you asked.  Take it away, stupendous supermodels of PR!

A divorced and single parent, Eva (Julia Louis Dreyfus) spends her days enjoying work as a masseuse but dreading her daughter’s impending departure for college. She meets Albert (James Gandolfini) – a sweet, funny and like-minded man also facing an empty nest.  As their romance quickly blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Catherine Keener), her new massage client. Marianne is a beautiful poet who seems “almost perfect” except for one prominent quality: she rags on her ex-husband way too much. Suddenly, Eva finds herself doubting her own relationship with Albert as she learns the truth about Marianne’s Ex.  ENOUGH SAID is a sharp, insightful comedy that humorously explores the mess that often comes with getting involved again.

Wanna go?  Of course you do.  Well, here’s the deets:

When: Thursday, September 26th

How: GOFOBO’s GeekForE link for the giveaway – http://l.gofobo.us/SLKh96H2

Good luck everyone, and for the winners, congrats!

Movie Review: Prisoners

Prisoners has gotten a huge amount of positive buzz, and it’s absolutely justified. With top-notch acting, a killer script that doles out thrills and heartbreak, not to mention the great visual style, it’s a film that brings awards season in with a bang.  This is a grand old roller-coaster, the kind that winds up and up, only to send you spiraling down with your heart in your throat. And it begs you to ask the hard questions, giving no easy answers.  The maze in the title art is a good indication that this film will be dealing with a story that twists and turns. You might get lost in the details, but the award winning cast makes it a puzzle you can’t help but try to solve for yourself.

Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) is a hard working guy with a family he adores. He’s good friends with neighbor Franklin Birch (Terrence Howard), and Kelley’s wife Grace (Maria Bello) is besties with Franklin’s wife Nancy (Viola Davis). So when they all get together and the Davis house for Thanksgiving, it the usual rumpus of amped kids, sloshed adults and food comas. Later in the evening, the adults notice their little girls are missing. A frantic search leads to the town oddball Alex (Paul Dano), a man with the “IQ of a ten year old”, but did he do anything? Keller knows Alex is hiding something, and when police detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) has to let Alex go, Keller decides to get to the bottom of things himself.

Movie Review: Insidious 2

Remember how amazing The Exorcist was? Well, Insidious wasn’t exactly at that level of awesome, but it was pretty damn good. Remember how crappy Exorcist II: The Heretic was? Oh yeah. Same thing here. An amazing opening salvo, then a convoluted, sloppy mess of a sequel. It’s a shame, to see a Fangoria magazine Chainsaw Award-winning horror film devolve. It’s especially rough to see quality actors giving their all to a movie that feels like someone forgot what the plot was halfway in, and then just told everyone to wing it.

The initial premise of Insidious is that a demon has been hunting Josh Lambert (again played by Patrick Wilson), and being unable to possess him, tries it’s luck with his oldest son Dalton (Ty Simpkins). Wife/mother Renai (Rose Byrne) has to deal with all the demonic fallout, while trying to keep her other young children safe. When we last left the Lamberts, psychic Elise had been killed, presumably by Josh while he was possessed by…something. Lights out, credits roll.
