Battle_of_the_Year_2013

Good morning party people!  Did your weekend go by without you getting your dance on?  Well, I can help you get your fix vicariously.  Because screening passes!  Battle of the Year is the latest cool-beans dance pic, and it’s starring Josh Holloway (LOST), Laz Alonso, Josh Peck, Caity Lotz and Chris Brown.  This film is hitting theaters September 20th, but wanna see it earlier?  Of course you do.  Need more info?  Of course I’ve got it.  Take it away, breakdancing PR peeps!

Battle of the Year is the Olympics of break dancing, a tournament held every year that attracts all the best teams from around the world, but the Americans haven’t won in fifteen years. Los Angeles Hip Hop mogul and former B-Boy Dante (Alonso) wants to put the country that started the Sport back on top. He enlists his hard-luck friend Blake (Holloway), who was a championship basketball coach, to coach his team. Armed with the theory that the right coach can make any team champions, they assemble a Dream Team of all the best b-boys across the country. With only three months until Battle of the Year, Blake has to use every tactic he knows to get twelve talented individuals to come together as a team if they’re going to bring the Trophy back to America where it started. Inspired by the actual world championship held yearly in France.

Determined to get engaged before her youngest sister’s wedding, flight attendant Montana Moore (Paula Patton) finds herself with only 30 days to find Mr. Right.  Using her airline connections to “accidentally” meet up with eligible ex-boyfriends and scour for potential candidates, she racks up more than 30,000 miles and countless comedic encounters, all the while searching for the perfect guy.

Mortal Instruments: Splat Hair Color Prize Pack giveaway!

Yes, I read YA Fiction.  I ain’t ashamed.  Because most of the time, that stuff is amazing.  Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Infernal Devices…and that’s just a sampling of what’s come around lately.  (Don’t get me started on classics like Lord of the Flies, Earthsea and The Hobbit.  Yes, The Hobbit was considered a book for the young’uns.)  Some of these have been made into films, some haven’t.  Some are on the way to you.  Which brings me to another series that’s pretty darn tasty, The Mortal Instruments.

What’s this particular tale about?  Oh, I’ve got you.  Here’s the synopsis of the first book, and the movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones:

Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray (Lily Collins), discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother (Lena Headey), Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.  Based on the worldwide best-selling book series.

I’ve read this novel and let’s just say there ain’t no lovestruck, happy vamps and werewolves around these particular parts.  City of Bones stars Lily Collins (Mirror, Mirror), Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga), Robert Sheehan (Misfits), Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Kevin Durand (Lost), Aidan Turner(UK’s Being Human), among many more.  Nice, right?  Absolutely.

So, wanna head to the theater and catch a show, for free?  This ain’t no screening invite, it’s a “you get free tickets to the movies” contest.  Plus there’s more….

Summer seems to be winding down, but before you decide to switch your movie diet to all-indie (not that there’s anything wrong with that), how about a slam-bang action film?  Groovy, ’cause we’ve got passes to Getaway, and I wanna give ’em to you!

What’s Getaway?  Well, I could blather, or I could let the wise and wonderful PR folks do a better job.  Yeah.  Here’s there’ release:

Wanna get in on the Baltimore screening of We’re The Millers?

Sorry I’ve been slack lately.  Things have been crazy.  I almost feel like heading out and starting over.  Maybe whipping up a new identity?  In We’re The Millers?  They’re doing just that.  Our PR people have the skinny:

From New Line Cinema comes the action comedy “We’re The Millers,” starring Jennifer Aniston (“Horrible Bosses”) and Jason Sudeikis (“The Campaign”).  The film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (“Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”).

David Burke (Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples.  So what could go wrong?  Plenty.  Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks.  Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms).

In order to wipe the slate clean—and maintain a clean bill of health—David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico.  Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose (Aniston) and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan.  One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the “Millers” are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.

Thurber directs “We’re The Millers” from a screenplay by Bob Fisher & Steve Faber (“Wedding Crashers”) and Sean Anders & John Morris (“Hot Tub Time Machine”), story by Bob Fisher & Steve Faber. The film also stars Emma Roberts (“The Art of Getting By”), Nick Offerman (“21 Jump Street”), Kathryn Hahn (“The Dictator”), Will Poulter (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”) and Ed Helms (the “Hangover” films).

Vincent Newman, Tucker Tooley, Happy Walters and Chris Bender are the producers, with David Heyman, J.C. Spink, Marcus Viscidi, Toby Emmerich, Richard Brenner and David Neustadter serving as executive producers.

Thurber’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Barry Peterson (“21 Jump Street”); production designer Clayton Hartley (“The Other Guys”); editor Mike Sale (“The Hangover Part II”); and costume designer Shay Cunliffe (“The Bourne Legacy”).

New Line Cinema’s “We’re The Millers” opens nationwide on August 9, 2013, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Seen the trailer?  Pretty nice, right?  Anybody that uses Mickey Avalon in a trailer is cool in my book.  So how to score yourself a pass?  You know what to do….

Movie Review: The Wolverine

Hugh Jackman is RIPPED y’all!  Okay, now that I’ve stated the obvious, is this second foray into Wolverine’s story worth the trip to the multiplex when there’s so many other superhero flicks out/slated for this year?  Sure, you could just look at IMDb and say “James Mangold directed?  He did Walk The Line!”  You could go with that, but remember; he also did Kate & Leopold.  *shudder*  I’m here with more intel; The Wolverine is definitely worth skipping Pacific Rim for another week…for.  In other words, it’s an artfully shot bit of cinematic beauty that manages to tell an epic story (epic in the Hollywood sense; this is definitely a Hero’s Journey flick) where the action comes fast and frequent, and the title character is crafted well enough that you want to know more about him, and root for his success.  Of course Jackman’s biceps don’t hurt that cause any.

The Wolverine starts us out with poor Logan’s nightmares, and as this story begins shortly after the occurrences in X-Men: The Last Stand, he’s got a lot of scary rattling around in his brain.  Still reeling from killing the love of his life, Jean Grey, he’s also replaying other dark times in his past.  Like the time he was in Nagasaki during WWII, when the Allied Forces dropped THE bomb.  Logan manages to survive, and saves Yashida, a young Japanese Army soldier (Ken Yamamura) that was too scared to commit seppuku with the rest of his bretheren.  Flash forward to the present day and Yashida (now played by Hal Yamanouchi) is dying, and wants to see Logan to say goodbye.  As Logan is very busy beating himself up emotionally, it takes quite a bit of persuading (and a good deal of emotional blackmail) by Yashida’s emmisary Yukio (Rila Fukushima, a funny and badass scene stealer whenever she’s onscreen).

But at last Logan heads to Japan.  However, we all know it’s not gonna be a simple goodbye, right?  Right.  Logan gets himself into trouble with the Yakuza, who want to kidnap Yashida’s granddaughter Mariko (Tao Okamoto), as well as a mutant with some truly killer powers.  That’d be Viper, played by Svetlana Khodchenckova (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), and she’s a nasty piece of work, though she works a latex bodysuit like nobody’s business.  Yeah, there’s a ton of stuff going on in The Wolverine, and it all fits together by the time the credits roll.  But this ain’t the kind of superhero movie where you can just let the action wash over you; in order to reap the maximum benefit, you’ve gotta pay attention.  The stories are twisty, turny affairs that make you work for your ah-ha moments.  Are most of those moments ones you can spot easily if you’re paying attention?  Absolutely.  But dang if Mangold doesn’t make it a fun trip.

Got Paranoia? Grab some screening passes and you will….

Paranoia, the destroyer!  (Bonus “you’re awesome” points for anyone who remembers that groovy tune.)  Here’s a little something that’s sure to give you paranoia…the movie Paranoia, of course!  It’s a tense thriller, and it’s got some amazing actors headlining, including Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman, Amber Heard and Harrison Ford. What’s it about?  Glad you asked.  Take it away, PR gurus!

The high stakes thriller Paranoia takes us deep behind the scenes of global success to a deadly world of greed and deception.  The two most powerful tech billionaires in the world (Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman) are bitter rivals with a complicated past who will stop at nothing to destroy each other.  A young superstar (Liam Hemsworth), seduced by unlimited wealth and power falls between them, and becomes trapped in the middle of the twists and turns of their life-and-death game of corporate espionage.  By the time he realizes his life is in danger, he is in far too deep and knows far too much for them to let him walk away.

Passes to the Baltimore screening of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters? We got ’em!

I love Young Adult fiction (or, as the cool kids say, YA).  So I enjoyed Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief.  But last night I saw the killer trailer for the sequel, Sea of Monsters, and I was blown away.  Looks like they’re cranking the dial to 11 for this film, and I for one couldn’t be happier.  Can you hear my mythology-loving heart go a-pitter-a-pat?  Yeah you can.  And sorry about that.

What’s this film about, you ask?  Well, our beloved PR folks have an answer for you:

Based on the best-selling series by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon, continues his epic journey to fulfill his destiny, as he teams with his demigod friends to retrieve the Golden Fleece, which has the power to save their home and training ground, Camp Half-Blood.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters opens officially on August 7th.  But seeing it early?  Sweet.  Here’s the usual info:
