Baltimore Movie Screening: free passes to Oz The Great And Powerful

I still love The Wizard of Oz.  It’s iconic.  It’s beautiful.  And those shoes are to die for.  I’ve even read a few of L. Frank Baum’s other Oz stories; Ozma of Oz is a great character, and I still wish we had lunch-pail trees in the real world.

Now the story just about everybody knows is getting a spiffy prequel.  Oz the Great snd Powerful is directed by Sam “I rocked Evil Dead y’all” Raimi and takes place before Dorothy, when “The Wizard” first makes his appearance in Oz.  I’m glad to see that this film is rated PG; from the trailer and artwork I’ve seen it’s sure to be eye candy for all ages.  Mmm, so pretty.  But with this new, witch-tastic poster, it looks like they’re still gonna whip out the green for the Wicked Witches….

The official synopsis:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful wizard but into a better man as well.

For more info, check out the official Web site at Disney.com/TheWizard, the film’s Facebook page, and the Disney Pictures Twitter feed. Oz the Great and Powerful is in theaters March 8, in DISNEY DIGITAL 3D™, REALD 3D and IMAX® 3D.

Now, about those passes.  Ready?  Read on….

Movie Review: Warm Bodies

With Warm Bodies, director Jonathan Levine (50/50) takes on the novel by  Isaac Marion, a zombie-genre favorite (Marion’s prequel novella, The New Hunger, was just released as an e-book).  Warm Bodies the film gives just enough of a spin on current zombie mythology to keep things fresh, but keeps enough “zombie-ness” to please genre fans.  This mashup of love story, zombie movie and Shakespeare send-up could find a wide audience.  It’s a quirky, fun film that doesn’t take itself too seriously and yet still delivers a few Deep Thoughts about life, and how we live it.  Not too shabby for a film relegated to the dreaded February dumping ground.

Zombie “R” (it’s the only part of his name he still remembers) does the same thing every day; eat, shamble, stare vacantly at his surroundings.  He also likes to pick up random items that spark something in him; sunglasses, books, a snowglobe.  His “house”, an abandoned airplane, is littered with things he’s collected.  But one day as he’s searching for food (read: living humans), he meets living girl Julie.  He’s drawn to her and wants to keep her safe.  But is that him, or the brains of Julie’s boyfriend (that R just ate) talking?  And R isn’t the only one changing….

I know, I know.  You’ve always known you have what it takes to make it big.  But you’ve never had the chance to show Hollywood.  Well, now you do.  And if you make an impression you just may find yourself on the big screen in this summer’s Insidious 2.

Sure, it’s only a walk-on role, but you never know where that’ll lead.  You’ve gotta start somewhere.  Just ask Suzanne Somers, who played “Blonde in T-Bird” in American Graffiti.  Or Kevin Spacey, who played “Subway Thief” in Heartburn.  Why just think of it; before too long you could join the list of stars who are trying to forget that no-name role that started the wheels turning!  At the very least, you’re sure to meet stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins, who are reprising their roles as Josh, Renai and Dalton Lambert.

From the Insidious 2 Web site:

Think you can make it in The Further? Show us! Enter a video submission that shows us why you should be considered for a walk-on role in the film. You can act out a scene, dress up as your favorite character, or just tell us why you love the movie. The winner will be selected based on originality and relevance to the film so get creative and good luck!

So, famous-person-to-be, what are you waiting for?

Hurry — only a few days left to vote for The Ghastly Awards!

Like things that go bump in the night? Crave spooky? Love horror comics? Then the Ghastly Awards want to hear from you! Fans have a voice in this year’s awards, and if you’re a creator you can nominate for next year while you’re at it!

This year’s Ghastlies should be an amazing crop of winners, considering the awesome amount of talent & quality comics that are nominated. As one of the judges, I’ve gotta admit the going was tough….

Here’s the deets:

Don’t forget to vote for the 2012 Ghastly Awards!

Movie Review: Broken City

Allen Hughes (Menace II Society) shows that he can do the gritty city thriller here in the 21st Century with Broken City.  Meanwhile, Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones have a grand old time getting into their characters and playing the ol’ double/triple cross.  It’s a fun film that isn’t tough to follow — a nice bit of work that, considering all the maneuvering these characters get into — but delivers a fast-paced look at corruption and the lengths people will go to cover their tracks.

Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) is an ex-cop that quit the NYPD under less-than-perfect circumstances.  Seven years later he’s a PI that’s trying to make ends meet, when he gets a call from NYC Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe).  Who happens to be the former police chief, don’cha know.  Seems the Mayor wants Taggart to see who the Mayor’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is sleeping with, other than the Mayor.  Taggart obliges, but is it about adultery, or is the Mayor after something else?

Free Screening Passes: Bullet to the Head, January 28th

Gotta say I loved when Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger hit the stage at the Golden Globes.  Their “no, YOU speak English worse than I do!” skit was just adorable.  And just about right….

But you can judge for yourself, at least where Sly is concerned; we’ve got screening passes for his latest, Bullet to the Head.  It also stars Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) and Christian Slater, and is directed by Walter Hill (48 Hrs, Last Man Standing)

From IMDb:

After watching their respective partners die, a cop and a hitman form an alliance in order to bring down their common enemy.

There are 80 tickets available; each person will be allowed to download two tickets to this screening.  Nice, right?  I think so.

GOFOBO code and other info after the jump!

Star Trek Into Darkness wants to play with you. You game?

The new Star Trek film, Star Trek Into Darkness, opens this Summer.  For some folks it’s hard not to pore over various minutiae of the film, even though many of the key points are still shrouded in mystery.  Now you can do something besides try to figure out if Sherlock‘s Benedict Cumberbatch is Khan.  There’s a game headed your way, with all sorts of social networky-type things to link, scan and generally ogle.

Though I have to admit I’m not the gaming type, I am a sucker for an app.  Plus, it looks like there may be some geocaching to be had, and who doesn’t love a treasure hunt?  So you may just see me gettin’ my Star Trek on!

Oh, and Star Trek Into Darkness is slated for a May 17. 2013 release.  Even the poster says so.

The full press release after the jump!
