Opera!  It’s more than just a gal with horns belting out German.  (Though that’s pretty cool too.)  Our gracious PR partners have given us a tip on how to get discount tix to Tosca at the Lyric — enter code TOSCA to purchase seats for just $39 – $79 (regular price $95 – $165)!

Here’s the deets on Tosca, for those of you — like me — are pretty iffy on the whole opera storylines thing.

TOSCA

Artistic Director James Harp | Based on “La Tosca” by Victorien Sardou | Sung in Italian with English Surtitles

Coming to the Lyric in Baltimore on November 1 & 3, 2013 – the timeless opera by Puccini!

www.lyricoperahouse.com

Puccini’s great masterpiece of love, lust, and revenge is one of the most dramatically compelling in the entire operatic repertoire. The opera diva Floria Tosca is in love with the painter Mario Cavaradossi, but the evil Baron Scarpia, the Roman Chief of Police, desires her as well. His nefarious plot to have her involves political intrigue, sadistic brutality and horrific torture. Tosca’s dream of love is shattered by Scarpia’s duplicity, and in one of the most famous endings in opera, she leaps to her tragic death.

The production will star rising American superstar Jill Gardner in the title role, celebrated Puccini specialist Dinyar Vania as Cavaradossi, and Metropolitan Opera Star and Baltimore favorite Eric Owens in his role debut as Scarpia. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Steven White in a magnificent production directed by James Harp.

But even better?  We’ve got a pair of tickets for one lucky reader!  A’yup — free culture!  How to get a pair for yourself?  Read on, my dear.  Read on!

Movie Screening: Insidious, Chapter 2 – Get Your Code Now!

Did you see the first one?  It was the sleeper hit when it came out and I really dug it.  Yeah it had a shared plot with 1983’s ‘Poltergeist’ but the concept they explored call ‘The Further’ was just mind blowing and the movie went on to make mega-millions and garner this sequel which I hope is just as good.

Mortal Instruments: Splat Hair Color Prize Pack giveaway!

Yes, I read YA Fiction.  I ain’t ashamed.  Because most of the time, that stuff is amazing.  Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Infernal Devices…and that’s just a sampling of what’s come around lately.  (Don’t get me started on classics like Lord of the Flies, Earthsea and The Hobbit.  Yes, The Hobbit was considered a book for the young’uns.)  Some of these have been made into films, some haven’t.  Some are on the way to you.  Which brings me to another series that’s pretty darn tasty, The Mortal Instruments.

What’s this particular tale about?  Oh, I’ve got you.  Here’s the synopsis of the first book, and the movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones:

Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray (Lily Collins), discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother (Lena Headey), Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.  Based on the worldwide best-selling book series.

I’ve read this novel and let’s just say there ain’t no lovestruck, happy vamps and werewolves around these particular parts.  City of Bones stars Lily Collins (Mirror, Mirror), Jamie Campbell Bower (The Twilight Saga), Robert Sheehan (Misfits), Kevin Zegers (Gossip Girl), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Kevin Durand (Lost), Aidan Turner(UK’s Being Human), among many more.  Nice, right?  Absolutely.

So, wanna head to the theater and catch a show, for free?  This ain’t no screening invite, it’s a “you get free tickets to the movies” contest.  Plus there’s more….

Geeky Giveaway: World War Z soundtracks!

The movie came a’tcha at the speed of sound.  So isn’t it just and right that you get your hands on the soundtrack?  Y’know, the soundtrack by Muse and Marco “I wrote the soundtrack for Scream” Beltrami that Huffington Post says is “Perfect”?  Yes, you need it.  Here at Geek for e, we’d like to help you with that.

World-War-Z-SoundtrackWBR_large

We’ve got 4 copies of the original soundtrack to World War Z, and we’re giving ’em away!  Yes, yes we are.  How to you win yourself a copy?  It’s easy.

What’s your favorite horror movie music?  The Exorcist‘s “Tubular Bells”?  Or maybe when John Carpenter tweaked that score for HalloweenJaws‘ scary-cool DA-DUM?  Or the 80s throwdown of The Lost Boys?

THERE’S NO WRONG ANSWER FOLKS.  I’m just curious.  And I’ll pick four winners from among the entries.

How to enter?  Oh, you know the drill.  Send me an email with the subject line “Surviving The Zombie Apocalypse With Muse“.  Include your name, snail-mail address (how else am I gonna get it to you?) and a bit about your favorite horror movie music.  That’s it.  Do it by Monday, July 1st at 5:00pm and you could be a winner!

No guarantees that Muse’s music will soothe the savage zombie, however.  For defeating the hordes of undead you’re on your own.

But if you’re holding a copy of the World War Z soundtrack?  Just know I’ll be jealous of you as I sprint away from the infected.

(NOTE: This giveaway is for US folks only.  Because I’m too cheap to send out to winners overseas.  There, I said it.)
