No? Me neither. But I got a heads-up press release yesterday that clued me in on this upcoming film. I’m intrigued, partially because there are no pics on the interwebs, but mostly because the screenplay for this film was written by Zoe Kazan. That’s right, she’s Elia Kazan‘s (On the Waterfront, East of Eden and a zillion other amazing classics) granddaughter. So I’m hoping that she’ll pull a Sofia Coppola and knock it out of the park.
Want more info on the movie besides the screenwriter’s link to Hollywood royalty? Okay; Ruby Sparks stars Antonio Banderas (The Skin I Live In), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right) and Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development). The directors are Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who you may know from their work on Little Miss Sunshine. This movie is slated for release July 25, 2012. And the story? Here’s the dish from the press release:
Calvin (Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person.
Sounds like a Weird Science or Stranger than Fiction retooling, but with an indie vibe. I can see myself curled up at The Charles with a bag of popcorn (and okay, a glass of wine from the tapas place next door) catching this flick.
More on this new film as we get it!
