Based on the Boom Studio’s comic of the same name, 2 Guns is a story about two undercover agents working toward the same cause but not knowing that each other is undercover for their respective Government Agency. DEA Agent Bobby Trench (Denzel Washington) is tasked with catching a drug king-pin from Mexico but also in trapping the “partner” he’s using to get to that goal. Naval Intelligence Agent Marcus Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) is tasked with the same thing. On their run from the cartel they find out that each is not who they say they are and that their common goal has taken on a twist that neither expected.
That plot may seem like it would make a great James Bond style movie with intrigue and action and adventure. But in 2 Guns we get a buddy-cop film with lots of laughs from Wahlberg’s character as Washington is the “straight” guy. It is a modern Riggs and Murtough with the interactions between Trench and Stigman and I could see them making a series out of these movies. And yes, I know that Boom Studios just released a 3 Guns sequel so who knows if material from that story will make it to the big screen but it wouldn’t surprise me if it did.
So what did I think of the movie? I’ll change it up this week and give you a tease before the break….it was lots of fun! Click below to keep on reading.
Grade: 4 our of 5
Blake Masters and Steven Grant managed to take a comic that not many know of and write a script that captures the fun of the two characters and flesh them out for the big screen. Baltasar Kormákur directed a fun (and I keep using this word on purpose) movie that delivers…well, the fun. There isn’t too much intenseness in 2 Guns as the action is very lighthearted (anyone else ever use that word to describe an action movie???).
Paula Patton (daughter-in-law to TV legend Alan Thicke) plays Deb a fellow DEA Agent who has a back-story with Trench (they were/are in a relationship). I just got done reading the article on Yahoo.com today where Patton mentions that the topless scene she added to the movie felt right and was a surprise to both Kormákur and Washington upon shooting. Robert John Burke plays Jessup their boss who is tough-as-nails but knows the path that Trench needs to go down to get the final result.
Meanwhile Wahlberg’s Stigman is a sharp shooter and the comedy of the movie. Wahlberg really knows how to play smart-ass and cocky and this is another one of those characters that just fits for him as an actor. His boss is Corporal Quince played by James Marsden and it is great to see him move away from his X-Men days and play different types of jerks.
But the ones that seemed to be having the most fun are the two bad guys – the king of the drug cartel, Papi Greco played by Edward James Olmos and the CIA-hole Earl played by Bill Paxton. Both just know how to have fun with being bad and I read a story the other day that said they at one point just rifted on each other for about 30-minutes giving each other a dig all while in character and all off the top of their head. Classic!
With a run time of 109 minutes (and again this is a great length for a movie, not too long and just long enough to give you what you want and leave you wanting more) and rated R for language, brief nudity, and lots of action….Run do not walk and go see 2 Guns this weekend. It is a fun, date night, movie for all to enjoy!
