The Class of 1999 is back!!! That’ right, those crazy kids from the American Pie film franchise are back on the big screen. Let’s forget about the direct to DVD American Pie movies (even though they did have some funny moments in all of them) because we get a new movie featuring our favorite graduating class from East Great Falls.
The American Pie movies are the raunchy teen comedy for our 30-something generation. There is a connection between the characters and their stories and how it relates to us. Now this doesn’t mean that an older crowd won’t get the jokes because let’s be real here….this kind of stuff happened to every generation. But for us, the now in our 30’s and moving on with our lives, this is our lives albeit not with the crazy things that happen to Jim.
When we first met Jim, Stifler, Oz, Finch and Kevin back in 1999’s American Pie we were following them along their last days in high school. Kevin was dating Vicky. Jim and Michelle had an interesting night when they hooked up. Oz and Heather were not sure where they would be in a few years. Finch was Finch and well Stifler was that guy that just wanted to keep the party going. In 2001’s American Pie 2 our group of friends are back from college and trying to keep friendships going that had been around for years. Relationships may come and go but summer fun with your close friends will all ways be there. Then in 2003’s American Wedding we get to watch as two kids that met in high school and stayed together through college are nowgetting married as Jim and Michelle tie the knot.
So what has happened to our favorite class from East Great Falls since 2003?
They’ve grown up. Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) have a two year old son and are living in Chicago. Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) works from home and has a lovely wife named Ellie (Charlene Amoia). Oz (Chris Klein) has moved out west to LA and is hosting a sports show on an ESPN type channel. He even competed in a dance compaction show called ‘Celebrity Dance Off’ and lost to Gilbert Gottfired. Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is still utilizing his world charm and claims that he has traveled the world. Stifler (Seann William Scott) apparently is not running his own business as stated in American Pie presents: Band Camp and is currently working as a Temp for a Mutual Fund company in Michigan. Lastly, Jim’s dad (Eugene Levy) is now living alone as Mrs Levenstein passed away three years ago. He is trying to find a way to stay motivated and move forward with his life as well as be there for Jim as he’s done many times before.
American Reunion delivers the crude, rude, and lewd humor that we have come to expect and I am very happy to say that Universal did not ruin the movie by showing all the good jokes in the previews. There are things that you will have to see to believe. I’m trying to write this review and not ruin the movie by giving away the jokes and let me tell you that I have deleted and re-typed multiple times and still can’t figure out what to say or not to say.
So I’ve decided that I’m going to do the review this way…
The Good:
- The gang’s all back!
- Seann Willam Scott still manages to make Stifler a lovable dick.
- Jim’s plights with Michelle as they try to reconnect and fix their stalling sex life.
- Oz dealing with a party girl for a girlfriend and still having feelings for Heather(Mena Suvari) after all these years.
- Jim’s dad and his words of wisdom as well as finally getting screen time with Stifler’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge).
- Very cool cameo appearance by Rebecca De Mornay as Finch’s mom. Trust me in that you will like her and what she does.
- Some funny signs of the time as this group has grown up along with us.
- Rude and crude humor that will have you laughing.
The Bad:
- Cameo appearances by former classmates that really amounted to a few seconds on screen. Jessica (Natasha Lyonne) and Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) were both brought back for a one scene joke. Now mind you that their scenes worked and were funny but both could have been cut out and no one would have even noticed.
- Even some of the original cast were more there to help with a subtle plot point then adding to the overall story of the film. Vicky(Tara Reid) and Heather I’m looking at the two of you. Kevin, you’re a close second.
- The credits point out the obvious – this movie isn’t made if both Jason Biggs and Seann Willam Scott aren’t credited as Executive Producers.
- This is probably the last time we’ll see our friends on the big screen. We’re getting older and is there any more of our story that can be told?
The OMG:
- Stifler + cooler + revenge on douche high school seniors.
- Jim Porky Piggin it!!
This movie has it all and lives up to the R rating – drugs, alcohol, nudity, and language. Coming in at an hour and forty-five minutes American Reunion is the movie we’ve been waiting for to close out the book for our generation.
Rating = 4 out of 5 slices of pie
