Twittreview: “Runner Runner” – Grade: 2.5 out of 5; Richie Furst (Justin Timberlake) a Princeton Under-grad getting entwined into the world of an online poker empire run by Ivan Black (Ben Affleck). Flat script, paint by numbers plot, felt painfully long (ironic as it is a 91 min run time).
I was expecting a lot more from Runner Runner. I like Timberlake and Affleck in just about all that they are in and both really are the stand out performances in a movie that is flat, paint by the number, and all over a complete bore. RR is another of those movies where something happens to our Protagonist (Furst/Timberlake), he confronts the Antagonist (Black/Affleck), they end up working together until we learn that the rub is that Black is planning on framing Furst for all crimes that are being brought up by the FBI and the Costa Rican Government. Essentially Runner Runner is the child of The Social Network and 21 where it wants to be big-word-uber-intelligent yet it is just a man trying to rob a bank.
The house may always win but in this case it is a draw.
