Psst: wanna be an actor? Casting call for Insidious 2, if you dare!

PHOTO: Screen Rant

I know, I know.  You’ve always known you have what it takes to make it big.  But you’ve never had the chance to show Hollywood.  Well, now you do.  And if you make an impression you just may find yourself on the big screen in this summer’s Insidious 2.

Sure, it’s only a walk-on role, but you never know where that’ll lead.  You’ve gotta start somewhere.  Just ask Suzanne Somers, who played “Blonde in T-Bird” in American Graffiti.  Or Kevin Spacey, who played “Subway Thief” in Heartburn.  Why just think of it; before too long you could join the list of stars who are trying to forget that no-name role that started the wheels turning!  At the very least, you’re sure to meet stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins, who are reprising their roles as Josh, Renai and Dalton Lambert.

From the Insidious 2 Web site:

Think you can make it in The Further? Show us! Enter a video submission that shows us why you should be considered for a walk-on role in the film. You can act out a scene, dress up as your favorite character, or just tell us why you love the movie. The winner will be selected based on originality and relevance to the film so get creative and good luck!

So, famous-person-to-be, what are you waiting for?

Movie Review: Sinister

When I first saw this film, I hated it.  Couldn’t stand it.  Pissed me off, even.  Then I realized; I’d been scared through the whole thing.  It’s a feeling I hadn’t experienced in the movies in quite some time.  It was such a strange feeling I couldn’t recognize it.  Okay, there’s a little bit of pissed off still left in me, but that’s for a good reason; Sinister is non-stop horror that whips together the best of ghost stories, urban legends, mythology and lowdown slasher tropes.  It also gives no quarter to the characters in the story, and as such gives relief to the audience.  Forget jokes that break up the tension, because Sinister is here to do one thing and one thing only: scare the [Radio Edit] out of you.

Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke, doing a masterful job) is a true-crime novelist that believes his calling is A Great Important Thing that can have nothing else get in the way.  So obviously, he’s broke.  Hey looky; a house where some wicked horrible murders occurred is on the market.  For cheap!  A place to live and research a new book; what could go wrong?  Um, have you seen the poster for this movie, dude?

Movie Review: House at the End of the Street

Hey, that house over there?  Yeah, the one that’s kind of falling apart.  Wanna hear a story?  It’s about a girl that went crazy and killed her family….  Mmm, gotta love local myths.  Hasn’t everyone had one of “those” houses in their neighborhood at one time or another?  Well, in House at the End of the Street it’s that time for a mother and daughter that are making a new start in a new town.  Probably should have gone one town over.  If they’d done that though, we wouldn’t have such a creepy-good shocker on our hands.  We win, they lose.

House at the End of the Street (or the lovely acronym I’ve seen, HATES) cranks things right up with a flashback that shows the unfortunate events.  Things continue on in the present, four years later.  Momma Sarah and teen daugher Elissa move into the house next door; such a bargain, what a great idea!  Sarah’s a doctor so her schedule is erratic.  But the first night there she notices a light on in the house next door.  The house where the murders occurred.  The house she was told was vacant.  Oops.

New images for House At The End Of The Street

The weather is cool.  There’s a breeze in the air.  And sure, there’s a tornado watch today but for me?  It’s time to get creepy.  Lucky for me that Relativity Media released some new photos for the scare-fest House at the End of the Street.

From IMDb/Relativity Media:

Newly divorced Sarah and her daughter Elissa find the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town. But when startling and unexplainable events begin to happen, Sarah and Elissa learn the town is in the shadows of a chilling secret.

Take a peek at the pics, and stay tuned for my review this Friday….

Thriller Barricade comes to DVD 9/25

October is headed our way at top speed it seems.  So if you’re like me and already planning your Halloween horrorfest, there’s a new movie hitting DVD this month that promises creepy scares.  Barricade is an “I see ghosts” thriller that stars Will & Grace/Perception‘s Eric McCormack as Terrance, a father who takes his kids to a cabin in the woods in order to try to ease the loss of his wife/their mom.  Um, perhaps a Disney cruise would have been a better idea, based on the trailer for this film….

This film has a bit of The Shining feel to it, as the description hints that “you are never really sure what’s real.  What [Terrance is] seeing, at a certain point, he realizes is possibly not quite true.”  Check out the blurb from the press release:

A holiday in the mountains is an opportunity for the Shade family to accept their tragic loss and start anew.  Little do they know they’ll all be tested in unimaginable ways. Apart from their fun-filled first night at the cabin and a snowball fight the following morning, the family experiences events that would frighten the most fearless.  The harrowing ordeal they are faced with, and ultimately survive, forces Terrance to overcome his fears and truly understand what it means to be a parent.

What’s really freaking me out is that this comes from WWE Studios.  Yep, it’s a subsidiary of wrestling’s WWE.  As wrestling seems to have a home on SyFy — hey nerds, these are the guys that used to pants you in Phys Ed! — maybe I’ll take a moment and give this film a chance.  I mean, it can’t be as bad as SyFy’s Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus.  Then again not much could….

Movie Review: The Possession

Don’t Go In The Woods.  Don’t Go In The Basement.  Don’t Go In The House.  Don’t Go To Sleep.  “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart”(do doo do doo dooby do!)  It seems like horror movies are forever telling us what we shouldn’t be doing, y’know, if we wanna live and stuff.  The Possession struck fear deep into my heart, because it tells me not to buy weird stuff at yard sales.  Nooooooo!

Since this film is produced by Sam Raimi, who I always equate with great horror (Evil Dead, Drag Me To Hell, 30 Days of Night) rather than so-so Spiderman, I had hight hopes for this film.  Luckily, The Possession is just as creepy as the real-world events it’s based on.  With an original The Amityville Horror vibe and effective performances by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Matisyahu, Grant Show, Kyra Sedgwick and young Natasha Calis as new Box owner Emily, The Possession is a great way to get spooked.

Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 3

Once upon a time, there were two little girls.  They lived in a big house with Mommy, Step-daddy and their own pet demon.  Except the demon wasn’t really a pet.  And things didn’t end up Happily Ever After.  The tagline for Paranormal Activity 3 is “Discover how the activity began”.  And damn if they don’t show you.  Vividly.  Fasten your seat belts kiddies, it’s gonna be a bumpy night.

Reason #338 for wishing you were at Screamfest LA: Singularity

Let’s face it; short films are awesome, but we rarely get to see them outside of bits during the Oscars (and if you’re lucky, at the AFI during their pre-Oscar shorts fest).  But sometimes, and I say sometimes, we’ll get a peek at a short film that sounds so awesome I’ve gotta share.  This Saturday at this year’s Screamfest LA — the horror movie fest any self-respecting genre geek slavers over — they’ll be showing the short Singularity.  You wanna know more about it?  Of course you do.
