New Dark Shadows trailer hits tonight!

Depp.  Burton.  Collins.

Sounds good, right?  Vampires, ghoulies, ghosties…and the wonderfully warped world of Tim Burton.  I used to rush home when re-runs of the original Dark Shadows played on weekday afternoons, so hearing about this movie got my expectations up.  Hearing that this will be a bit of a spoof — think The Brady Bunch the tv show vs. The Brady Bunch Movie — makes me think Burton may have another winner on his hands.  She said hopefully.

We’ll all get a good look at Barnabas Collins and his brood tonight, when a trailer for Dark Shadows comes to Apple.  We all know that Johnny Depp is never one to pull away from a role, so his portrayal of Barnabas should be a real hoot.

Ballet lovers can see Swan Lake in 3D for one night only

Swan Lake.  Gorgeous choreography, beautiful dancers, amazing moves.  If you like ballet — or just love the idea of watching gorgeous men and women leap and spin in rather revealing outfits — Swan Lake is definitely a ballet to catch.  Especially when it’s done by Tony Award winning choreographer Matthew Bourne.  And if you live in the Columbia area (or can get there), you can see this ballet while chomping on popcorn and nachos.  Best of both worlds, right?

New Avengers “character banner” posters!

March is here, and with the warmer weather I’m getting more and more excited about this year’s Summer movie season.  Hunger Games opening next week, Men In Black 3 and Battleship in May, not to mention Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Dark Shadows, Brave and The Dark Knight Rises…. But my comic book geekette is really jonesing for some Avengers, and I’m double-lucky right now; it opens the first week of May, and Marvel has just released new posters that showcase each of the assembled superheroes.  Wanna see?  Yeah you do.

The Black List 2011: what you SHOULD have been watching this year

The cool kids.  You know ’em.  The ones that know all the bands…that haven’t been signed yet.  The artists that are so underground even MICA doesn’t know they exist.  The movies that haven’t made it to production yet, but everyone’s talking about.

Well, I can’t do anything about those first two — I am so totally not cool enough — but I do have an in for the third.  Behold, The Black List.  It’s a yearly grouping of all the screenplays that folks in the know would love to have seen green-lit this year.

Earlier Black Lists have seen the likes of Juno and Lars and the Real Girl.  So this year’s list could have a few films that will have everyone talking next year.  And I’ve gotta say there are quite a few I’d like to see Right Now.

Movie Review: Young Adult

High school.  Whatever.  But for some, high school was their best, shining moment; the time where they were everything to everyone and nothing could stand in their way.  Like Mavis Gary, a former Queen Bee of her high school that moved to the big city and became a bestselling writer.  Oh, so that sounds good to you?  Me too.  But for Mavis, her world is a revolving door of writing, drinking, passing out face-first on the bed, and regret.  Her way out of this slump?  Go find her high-school boyfriend and get him back, of course.  I’m sure his wife and baby girl won’t be too much of an obstacle.

Jason Reitman has gotten a bit serious with the amazing Up In The Air, but with Young Adult he comes back to his quirky comedy-drama niche that made Thank You For Smoking and Juno so enjoyable.  Speaking of Juno, screenwriter Diablo Cody is on her A game here; with Young Adult, I forgive her her Jennifer’s Body trespasses.  Mostly because I am ZOMG excited to see how her work on The Evil Dead plays out, because her snarky ‘tude is a perfect fit for that film, but also because Young Adult itself is a whole lot of fun.  Embarrassing fun.  Uncomfortable fun.  Hey-I-Did-That-Once-How’d-She-Know fun.

Sneak Peak of Dark Knight Rises for some IMAX theaters means Happy Christmas Batman fans!

Itching to get a real look at The Dark Knight Rises?  I for one can’t wait to see Anne Hathaway as Miss Selina Kyle (and get a peek at a young — maybe not evil? — Ra’s Al Ghul).  Well, if you’re near an IMAX theater the chances are very good you’ll get your holiday wish.  Warner Brothers is releasing a peek at the prologue of the film on December 16th here in the States (UK folks’ll get their peek on the 21st).  Straight from the home of Bugs Bunny:
