Mmm, awards season. I watch ’em on tv and I love every second. Okay, the commercials aren’t as awesome as the ones they show during the Super Bowl, but otherwise I’m hooked lock, stock & barrel.
But maybe you have a way to vote and aren’t just a part of the crowd. For one awards ceremony, it’s time to gear up, not give. I’m talking about the Harvey Awards, kudos that are given to “recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art”. Bonus; the Harveys are given out during the Baltimore Comic-Con (which is September 8th and 9th of this year).
Who votes? According to the Harveys website, “those who write, draw, ink, letter. color, design, edit, or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field” are eligible to vote. Since I met several madly skilled local artists at last year’s Con, I figure there are many, many others in our ‘hood that may be able to send off a ballot.
Plus, how cool will it be to see who wins? Very. Scott Kurtz of PvP will be the Master of Ceremonies (and if you aren’t reading PvP, check it out, it’s awesome), and you’re practically guaranteed to see many of the winners at the Con before and after the awards, so you can chat them up, which is a big plus for Baltimore Comic Con.
Scroll down the Harvey Awards’ main page to see the 2011 winners, which include “Doonesbury” by Gary Trudeau, artist Mark Morales (Thor), ”Hark! A Vagrant” by Kate Beaton, and my personal favorite, “American Vampire” by Scott Snyder, Stephen King and Rafael Albuquerque.
And even if you don’t have the creds to cast a ballot, lemme know who you think should get a nod!
